In my Entertainment Discourse, I looked into the life of Garth Brooks as an image, and how he actively sought to change that image. When outlining the story of this Chris Gaines departure, it became apparent that his fans, themselves, were the "sender" in the situation. Garth wanted to switch from his ORDINARY WORLD to a new, SPECIAL WORLD, but he needed something from this MENTOR (or sender). In this case, the "magic gift" was his audiences approval. Because they did not ever give this gift to Garth, he was tuck in the ORDINARY WORLD with both his INNER and OUTER PROBLEMS still intact.

The transition Garth wanted:

There is no pause between Garth and Chris. At the 20 second mark, Garth walks effortlessly through the gate to the SPECIAL WORLD.

The transition Garth got:

Here, when Garth reaches the gate at the 16 second mark, he crosses through, but without the magic gift - his audience's approval. Thus, without the gift of his sender, everything goes haywire and the sounds from his old image carry over, becoming suffocating. Though he has reached the SPECIAL WORLD, he hasn't escaped his past, because he lacks the sender's gift.
